Welcome to the Bluestocking Bunnie's Book Club

Hi there,

In case you’re new here, I’m Gabs and I’ve been part of the book community for three years now! Between Book reviews here and on my YouTube channel, talking about arcs and the current reads on Instagram, I’ve been sharing my thoughts on books for a while. I’ve always wanted a book club, a space to share awesome books with awesome people! I finally put it together and I’m currently hosting it on Fable! If you haven’t gotten the chance to join yet, you should! I’d like to introduce you to the Bluestocking Bunnie’s Book Club.

We chose our first book for November, The Graveyard Shift by M. L. Rio. I was so excited to read this after realizing that she had a new book coming after If We Were Villains. Which once finished, changed my brain chemistry forever. The BlueStocking Bunnies is a monthly book club, because while I am able to put a decent amount of books away each month, most of our members are adults with responisbilities.

November had me in a mental chokehold after the election, and I had a lot of difficulty accomplishing anything. I figure even at my worst, I’m capable of finishing at least one novel a month so this book club could be a great motivator to keep going ya know?

I decided on the title of the BlueStocking Bunnies because I wanted something that was going to be on brand for my tiny, but grrowing bookish empire. I love reading, I love talking about books, and I love telling people about the books that I read. Bluestockings is a word from Regency time that essentially means a well read woman. I am nothing if not well-read.

I chose the book genres based on things that I always enjoy reading so that if it happens to be a really busy reading month for me, I won’t be turned off because the book club pick happens to be outside my comfort genre. BSB currently reads Mystery, Thriller, Horror, and Graphic Novels. As long as the novel falls somewhere in those categories, it’s welcome here.

I had a blast reading this with my book club members even though I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I wish. Graveyard Shift follows a motley crew of smokers who hang out in a cemetery attached to the local university. They show up one night and realize that there is a new grave dug, it's super fresh, and the novel is essentially about who it's for. With the summary, I was expecting a race to discover and stop this would-be murderer but it was more intriguing than anything else and had a much more science tilt than I truly would ever want.

For a novella, with under 150 pages it managed to be too slow in the beginning and too fast in the end. While the characters were enjoyable, there just wasn’t enough of them. I found the writing to be much too involved for such a simple story and I didn’t get nearly enough murder as I was expecting. I think Miss Rio’s writing lends itself much better to full-length novels, there just wasn’t enough time for the novella to be good. She’s coming out with another full-length novel in June called Hot Wax, which I’m hoping will be more up my alley.

The Book for December has been chosen and started! We’re reading Babel by R. F. Kuang. This novel has become a bit of a classic and I’ve been wanting to read it ever since I saw its tag line. An Act of Translation is always a betrayal. I don’t really need anymore and I’m already obsessed, I’m only a single chapter in and I have this feeling that this novel will become an integral part of my frontal lobe.
