Cinema #90: The Video Dead

It’s been a long time since I’ve written a blog. I started up my youtube channel and the writing kind of fell by the wayside a bit, but I’m back and look forward to getting into it again. What better way to kick it off than with a post about the cheesy horror movie Boy Wonder and I just watched The Video Dead?
We have this standing date that right before bed (an hour or two) we will randomly choose a cheesy 80’s or 70’s scary movie that we haven’t seen and just snuggle. A good way to easily spend time with your significant other. We both love scary movies, and I have a special place in my heart for the cheesy ones.
So In Video Dead, two incredibly independent siblings, Jeff and Zoe are moving into their family’s new home. Their parents are in Saudia Arabia for a few weeks, so they showed up early to the house unseen and helped get everything set up.

Soon we learn that the house their parents bought was a Murder House. The man, living in it before is murdered by a television being delivered to the wrong place. This television is unique, it’s a portal from the world of horror movies to reality. Thanks to the guy taking in a package he didn’t order. A ragtag crew of zombie are released and they promptly fuck him up.

Jeff meets his neighbor April, who is a bit of a scatterbrain and due to negligence the rich people’s dog she’s walking gets loose. It’s not au revoir for Chocolate as when we next see them, they are DED dead. Stressed out about telling them that their dog died in her care, Jeff comes up with an OUTLANDISH plan about saying that it choked on a ball, but April blames him instead of a random passerby, the rest they say is history.
A random man in the same vein as the town crier from Friday the 13th comes to let Jeff know that the television is dangerous and has been delivered to the wrong home. Still, he shoos him away instead of looking for a television past its prime and delivering it to its rightful owner. Together they decide to fight the zombies and create an escape plan with Zoe.

All in All, I enjoyed this film. It was that perfect hit of nostalgia for a time I never experienced. There were so many horror film references, and the music was Halloween Inspired. The Practical effects were decent for its time, and I even jumped at a few parts. Although the dialogue was a bit stilted and odd, there were plenty of really funny parts. I love a horror movie with a touch of levity. It ranks high on my cheese-o-meter list and honestly, that’s all I ask for.
Have you seen The Video Dead? Will you?
Until Next Time,
