Cinema #85: Jaws

Hey There!
For the 45th anniversary, AMC held a showing in 3D and IMAX and how many chances do you get to see JAWS in theaters? So of course I was there!

Boy Wonder and I pulled into our home AMC and where I thought we would only be a few of us, but the theater was decently full, It seems we weren’t the only ones wanting a small bit of the past.
So I believed that I had seen the movie several times, but after watching it again in theaters, I’ve come to the understanding that I have only seen clips. I jumped twice, and was rightly outraged at the audacity of the mayor.

I know that most people consider Jaws a scary shark movie, but I would like to present another option. I think at the heart of the matter, Jaws is actually a cautionary tale about what lengths corrupted people in power will go to keep their money, status and power. Not sure if that’s any more poignant than it is right now.
The film had a cast of loveable characters, and they were all on a mission to make Amity Beach safe again just in time for the summer tourist season. Sure the shark was eating people, but it’s an animal, and every animal deserves to eat.

Had the Mayor let the Police Chief do what was necessary when he suggested it, the beach more than likely would have been Hungry Shark free by the time the tourist season started.

Can we also talk about the gall of that Mayor? You actively obstructed justice, willfully endangered the public and all for what money? Two citizens died on your watch. You gleefully sent a family of citizens into water you knew for yourself was dangerous! Why he wasn’t the foundation for a brand new jail boggles me.

I can definitely see why Jaws (1975) is considered a classic, and I hope people learn that the real villain isn’t the shark, but greed.
What did you think about Jaws?
Until next Time,
