Cinema #85: X

Hey There,

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a scary movie in theaters, I generally try to avoid watching horror in regular theaters because my screaming might distract others,k but I love seeing scary movies at the Drive-in! Along with Boy Wonder, my sister, and her friend we headed to our local theater to see X. An A24 film about a porn crew that runs into a murderous killer in the middle of nowhere. I’ll try to avoid spoilers, but if you read from this point on, I can’t guarantee that something won’t be spoiled for you.

One of my favorite things about this film was the way it was filmed, it was an effortless amalgamation of old and new. The film takes place in 1979, when a rag-tag crew of sex workers makes their way to a boarding house in Houston, to film their latest porn feature. With RJ, their director, envisioning a cinematic dirty picture.

Once they arrive, they realize that the boarding house owners are HELLA weird and seem to be watching them at the most awkward times. Determined not to let them ruin their good time they continue on with the filming of their pornographic masterpiece. Just a heads up this movie is about sex. It features sex and does NOT shy away from it. Nudity is prevalent, even if it isn’t full-frontal it is OBVIOUS.

Another thing about this film I enjoyed was just the ultimate creep factor it represented. Even though it took a while to get going, almost every moment has this palpable sense of unease to it. Even when normal things are happening, which I loved!

The kills were unique and gory, and I’ve never been terrified of Old people, but these were definitely a creepy duo. It had a few twists and turns I wasn’t expecting, and I was pleasantly satisfied with the ending. Which is pretty rare in a horror film.

If you had any doubts about Jenna Ortega being this generation’s Scream Queen, I think this really cements this. She’s a fresh face in horror and I see her staying relevant for quite a stretch of time. I look forward to seeing more from her.
