Series #78: Wandavision

Hey Gang!

Boy Wonder and I finished Wandavision last night and I have thoughts that I have to get off my chest. We recorded a little podcast about our thoughts which will be on our youtube channel, by the end of the week, but I wanted to expand a bit more and basically just dump all the thoughts out of my head to make room for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episode 2.

Do keep in mind, this will probably contain spoilers, so if you have NOT finished Wandavision yet, please don’t read past the jump.

So the first thing I want to say about Wandavision is that I LOVED IT! It was amazing and I was enthralled from the 1st 5 minutes. I know a lot of people complained about the sitcom atmosphere of it, but I think it was a really unique way to bring all the characters together, not only to introduce them, but to also give them the ability to really grow and expand their depth.

As a fan of Dick Van Dyke, I instantly realized the direction that the series was going to go, and I had actually even been spoiled on a few aspects of the show, and was still able to enjoy it completely. 5 out of 5 stars, I was so interested in what was going to happen to each character. The only character that didn’t do anything for me was Hayward, I HATED HIM!

I like that the decades of the sitcoms not only allowed for the characters to grow, but each one showed a different aspect of Wanda’s personality. Which I loved, because they didn’t really do anything with her in the movies, and Scarlet Witch has always been one of my favorite Marvel Characters. I really hope that Disney/Marvel keep on this television path, there really isn’t a better way to give characters depth than to split it up into episodes, I feel like they wouldn’t have been as memorable or tugged at your heartstrings as much had it been shoved into a 2 hour movie.

I honestly think my favorite characters were Wanda, Darcy, Monica, Agnes, and the boys. I remember briefly reading about Wiccan and Speed when I was reading through X-men, and it was adorable to see kid versions of them. I loved Agnes because even though she turned out to be the villain, she was really a source of peace for Wanda. Despite the end result, She was there when Wanda needed a friend, and I think that was pretty admirable.

Poor Wanda, losing her parents, her bother, Vision, and now her boys? Like how much torture does she have to go through? Hasn’t she been through enough? I know that kidnapping the town wasn’t a good look, and she definitely could have kept that enclosed to her own house, or took over the town but gave the people back their free will, but she’s lost so much, can you really blame her for how her grief manifested? She never got to heal, she never got to recover, and she is literally a harbinger of Chaos Magic, what were we really expecting?

What’s really interesting to me, about others watching the show is that so many were surprised by Monica Rambeau having powers. She was my Captain Marvel, I didn’t learn about Danvers until I started reading X-men way later in life. It’s always so funny to me who people know as heroes, it kind of gives you a peek into their world and how they perceive things I think. I was so excited when they finally started giving Rambeau a little bit of her power. When I saw Captain Marvel in theaters, I was so confused by Monica being so young. I was just like, Why is she a kid? And who is Danvers? Meanwhile, everyone was looking at me like I was a lunatic.

Also, I definitely need Woo and Darcy to have their own tv show, it would be like Agents of Shield but SO MUCH BETTER, That show was straight up trash. Great concept, catastrophic execution. They would travel around the world solving mysteries, that may or may not be superhero related, plus they just have great chemistry. Bonus points, if every “previously on” opener is narrated by Luis from the Ant-man films.

Finally, Hayward. Man I hate that guy. I knew he was a bad guy the minute he was introduced but I just didn’t expect the level of evil that he ascended too. First, he takes apart Vision, what gives him the right? There’s no reason that Sword should have had his body, period. Second, to show his then grieving and distraught wife his body in pieces like that? A special kind of cruel. Third, the way that he talked to the other people on his team and especially Monica, I knew he was up to no good.

Fourth, When he created white Vision, and therefore not only lying about what he wanted Vision’s body for, not giving Wanda the closure she needed, but then to turn his body into a weapon to go kill his wife? All while having no free will or memories of his past life? How fucking dare you dude. And always what is his punishment? To sit in a cell, until some higher up decides to use him for another evil secret project? They just never seem to get any justice.

In Conclusion, I absolutely loved the story telling, the costuming and the way they wrapped actual reality with the reality Wanda created for herself. I think that this series was definitely a great start to their MCU universe expanding to television, I am thoroughly enjoying The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and I honestly can’t wait to see what they come up with for Loki!

Until Next Time,
