Cinema #86: Confess, Fletch

Cinema #86: Confess, Fletch

Hey there!

This year is passing by really fast and I honestly have not been doing a very good job of keeping track of it on the blog. I just have been crazy distracted with a bunch of different things.

There seems to be a real resurgence of mystery films coming to the theater and I’m so excited about it! You all know that I love a good mystery and its nice to be able to see more than one in theaters per year. Confess, Fletch, See How They Run and Amsterdam are all in theaters or will be released within the next few weeks.

Over the weekend, Boy Wonder and I headed out to AMC to see Confess, Fletch. It’s a colorful mystery comedy featuring John Hamm. It’s about a retired reporter, I.M. Fletch who arrives in Boston to a townhome that his girlfriend rented for him, only to find a dead woman inside.

Turns out He’s in Boston looking for 12 missing paintings that were stolen from his girlfriends home, and two had been sold by an art dealer there. From there the film shoots off like a rocket. Your introduced to a unique cast of characters all with something to hide, and police officers that are not only competent but funny as well!

While I generally love a good mystery this mystery wasn’t good. At best it was substandard. Lots of holes and clues that don’t quite fit squished together to fit the narrative. This films shining star is its cast and how they not only carry a substandard plot but shine enough to almost cover its tarnish.

All in all I did enjoy the film, but I wouldn’t see it again. I’m really looking forward to the other two films I mentioned and I’m hoping that they follow through more diligently on the mystery part.

What did you think about Confess, Fletch?

Until Next Time,

Moriartie
